Improve Your Mixing Ear with EQ Frequency Training

Improve Your Mixing Ear

You can know everything about the art of mixing, every technical detail, all the ins and outs, but ultimately it will be the first hand experience, not just the knowledge, that will make you great at mixing.

It takes a long time to develop the experience that will make you a better mixer, but it is primarily a combination of building critical listening skills and developing strong mix judgement. There are no shortcuts, but producers and mix engineers often look for any edge they can find.

We can’t always be in the studio, mixing and producing beats, and often times we get caught up in absentminded work, or perhaps we’re driving, or at the gym. During these times, if you’re a music producer, you’re probably listening to music, both for enjoyment and probably to develop your craft and to keep your musical ear fresh as well.

If you’re looking for any edge and want to improve your mixing ear and continue to develop your music production skills, here’s something that you can listen to, anytime at your own convenience. While it may not be as enjoyable as listening to your favorite songs, if you’re an ambitious producer, looking for any edge, it will certainly be helpful.

EQ Frequency Ear Training

This purpose of this video is to improve your frequency recognition which will improve your equalization skills and your overall mix balance judgement.

The video is straightforward. It plays various sound frequencies one by one and reveals what each frequency is. It starts off by introducing you to specific frequencies from 60hz to 12,000hz to familiarize you with them and then begins to play them randomly. By hearing each frequency being played before the name of the frequency is spoken, you can help train your ear to recognize different frequency ranges and then quiz yourself by listening carefully and guessing the frequency before it is revealed.

Familiarizing yourself with various sound frequencies will not make you an EQ or mix wizard. But it’s another tool to have in your arsenal that you can listen to in your spare time and could help you recognize problem frequencies in your mix with less difficulty, improving your workflow and offering value to you as a music producer.

Music producers are always looking for an edge and it’s worth giving EQ frequency ear training a shot.
