Kodak Black - Dying to Live

Dying to Live (2018)

Kodak Black

Florida born rapper Kodak Black began making music while still in elementary school. Both his music career and history of legal issues began at an early age, as he was expelled from school for fighting and faced several theft charges as a young teen. After joining rap group Brutal Youngnz, he started to pursue music more seriously, releasing his first mixtape in 2013. Several more mixtapes followed, with a breakthrough coming in 2015 when Drake posted a video dancing to Black’s song “Skrt.” Soon after, he signed a deal with Atlantic Records and released his first studio album in March 2017.

Kodak Black released his second studio album in December 2018, when it debuted at number one on the Billboard chart. His first album since his release from jail, Dying to Live drops as the rapper awaits a new trial for sexual assault charges. Though he doesn’t address this issue specifically, the album does contain numerous tracks reflecting his previous issues with violence and gang activity. Combining these moody, confessional tracks with more upbeat songs featuring Lil Pump, Travis Scott and others, the album garnered mostly positive reviews, considered by many critics to be a compelling evolution of his sound.
